Data Maturity Assessment

This is obviously the first step you want to take on.

You need a starting point, you need to understand where your organization stands regarding data. It can cover a LOT of topics.

🗒️ The template : A complete Excel file as evaluation model of your current state, at global level, including full questionnaire to cover 5 dimensions :

💡 How to use :

1️⃣ You’ll start with global assessment by answering all questions in Global Assessment tab.

2️⃣ Check your visual summary in Global Summary tab.

Strategy & KPIs

These templates are here to help you define your Data Governance strategy, but most importantly communicate about it.

Communicate your vision, the “why” and the benefits is key. Then comes the operating model and the framework detailing tasks that need to be performed.

🗒️ The templates : 2 documents here

• A PPT file covering the vision, current obstacles and your value proposition as Data Governance team, the operating model and the pillars and associated tasks of the framework.

• An Excel file with 17 KPIs to track covering the 5 dimensions from the maturity assessment (% coverage of roles on domain map, training completion rate, etc.).

💡 How to use :

1️⃣ Craft your vision by updating the obstacles and value proposition based on the maturity assessment (what will have the most impact for you?).

2️⃣ Define your target operating model - centralized or federated?

3️⃣ Clarify where you are on each pillar of the framework thanks to the information collected on the maturity assessment. For example on Data Domains pillar, maybe you already have defined them and identified data domain owners. These are the tasks you need to perform to reach higher scores on your KPIs.

4️⃣ Update your score on the KPIs for each domain for more granularity. You can do this update every quarter as follow-up.

Roadmap

Yep, now you need a clear step-by-step plan to implement Data Governance. Usually the harder is the beginning, the usual “where do we start”? There’s so much : we need to document, we need policy, we need quality… 🤯

Breath, you’ll do it at a long term scale.

🗒️ The template : A step-by-step PPT deck to build your roadmap with :

• Macro phases and methodology to deploy a Data Governance program

• A Data Governance heatmap covering all topics

• A Roadmap “starter” for the first year of the program

💡 How to use :

1️⃣ Review the macro phases to adapt to your context in terms of duration and macro topics to address

2️⃣ Update the Data Governance heatmap : list all topics involving Data Governance and then use color highlight to classify them in terms of priority

3️⃣ Adapt the roadmap in terms of streams duration. Be careful to use the first 3 months to do the assessment, strategy and framework (exactly what the templates are for!). Then you can setup data domains by order of priority using the pillars of the framework from the Strategy deck, you can list tasks for each domain and finalize your roadmap.

Roles & Committees

For each domain, you’ll have roles and responsibilities that need to be defined. Then committees are here to coordinate actions and take decisions at different level.

💡 How to use :

2️⃣ Review committees - start with a Data Governance Board to validate the framework!
